Role of Medical Oncology in Cancer Care

Medical oncology plays a pivotal role in the multidisciplinary treatment of cancer, offering various therapies that are tailored to the specific type and stage of cancer. The goals of medical oncology include:

  • Curative Treatment: Aims to eliminate the cancer and achieve long-term remission.
  • Adjuvant Therapy: Administered after surgery or radiation to destroy any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence.
  • Neoadjuvant Therapy: Given before surgery to shrink tumors and make them easier to remove.
  • Palliative Care: Focuses on relieving symptoms and improving the quality of life for patients with advanced-stage cancer, where curative treatment is not possible.
  • Maintenance Therapy: Used to keep cancer from returning after it has responded to the initial treatment.
